WHY ONE MAKES POOR DECISIONS.
Decision Making is the process of identifying a decision, acquiring information, and weighing potential solutions. Decision-making is crucial since it enables you to select from a variety of possibilities. Gathering all relevant data and weighing its benefits and drawbacks are necessary steps before reaching a decision. We probably have many decisions to make at any given time. But agency also brings with it the nagging shadow of doubt.
Reasons why we make bad decisions
- Emotions
Frustration, excitement, wrath, joy, and so on are all normal parts of the human experience. Our emotions, especially when we are angry or happy, might impair our capacity to make sound decisions. Our emotions hijack our perception of reality, and what appears to be a good decision becomes a horrifyingly scary, slimy, awful decision, or, what appears to be a dreadful notion draws us in with an irresistible power, until we wake up in a pool of our own vomit, unsure of what occurred.
How do you overcome the urge to make decisions while experiencing any emotions?
By developing deeper self-awareness, which is your character strength and self-control. Resist the need to respond to people or make decisions when you're emotionally charged.
2. Fatigue
It's simple to become stressed out, especially when making a difficult or significant decision. When we are worn out and confronted with a circumstance we've never encountered before, we struggle to make sense of it and fall back on habit. We act the same way we always have instead of seeing that this is a new situation that calls for a different response.
To overcome it, prioritize your time so that you can make your most essential decisions when you are most energetic. If possible, list down the decisions that are most crucial for you to make. You can also opt to give yourself some time and a break so you can return to it with new eyes.
3. Not Planning or Thinking Ahead
It's crucial to have the capacity to anticipate unforeseen circumstances and understand how to respond to them. If potential possibilities are not examined and the future consequences of a decision are not taken into account, poor decision-making will result.
Solution; You should always be thinking ahead and making plans for the future. Do not be afraid to consider unpleasant events, potential surprises, and worst-case situations. Recognize that it is your obligation to consider what might go wrong. Most people will call it "confronting reality".
Solution: Even if it's often wise to base decisions on our prior experiences, one should be careful to avoid making the wrong choice by carefully assessing the benefits and drawbacks. It's crucial to feel confident in your choices. You can increase your confidence in your pick or discover alternatives you may not have considered by looking at other options.
